Marketing nightmare: Lost personal data for 13,000 people

As if trying to salvage the company’s reputation after last year’s Gulf oil spill wasn’t enough, BP has a fresh case of egg on its face.

A laptop computer with personal data from about 13,000 of the Louisiana residents seeking compensation was … uh … misplaced during “routine business travel,” BP says.

Oops. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?

In this case, the laptop was password protected — but the data wasn’t encrypted.

That means the lucky finder got a spreadsheet with names, addresses, phone numbers and Social Security numbers.

BP had to send out 13,000 or so letters to people acknowledging that not only did they take it on the chin due to the spill, but insult was being added to their injury. The beleaguered oil company said it would pay for credit monitoring.

Good news for the claimants: They won’t be asked to re-submit data.

One lingering question posed to BP: Why did it take nearly a month to admit the information was lost?

“We were doing our due diligence and investigating,” a company official explained.

How many of your customers and business associates would be appeased with that argument?
